Skin Cancer Action Week

As the warm Australian summer approaches, it’s essential to remember that while we enjoy the beautiful blue skies and sunny days, the sun can be our enemy if we’re not careful. From November 18th to 24th, it’s National Skin Cancer Action Week, a timely reminder to protect our skin from harmful UV rays.

Community Care Chemist pharmacy manager Maria shares some important tips on how to safeguard your skin this summer. Did you know that two out of three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70? Early sun exposure can lead to skin damage, which, if left unchecked, may result in skin cancer. Maria emphasises that signs of sun damage, like hyperpigmentation, dry skin, and wrinkles, are early indicators to be aware of.

Here are some top prevention tips:

  1. Apply Sunscreen Properly: Use at least seven teaspoons of sunscreen, applying it 20 minutes before sun exposure. Don’t forget the face, neck, arms, legs, and back.
  2. Choose a Sunscreen with SPF 30 or Higher: Ensure your sunscreen meets Australian standards for optimal protection.
  3. Avoid Storing Sunscreen in Hot Places: Sunscreen can lose effectiveness if stored in high temperatures (e.g., inside a car).
  4. Wear Protective Clothing: Hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves are crucial for additional protection.

Maria encourages regular skin checks and visiting your GP for any concerns. This summer, let’s make safety a priority and enjoy the outdoors with confidence! For more advice, visit Community Care Chemist.
