Get the right advice and treatment for your skin

What is the largest organ in your body? ……. Surprisingly the answer is the skin. It is the protective coating that shields all our inner workings from the outer world, and as such plays a very important role in our health and wellbeing.

Normally our skin has a Ph of between 5-6, that is, it is acidic. The reason for this is that the acid environment protects us from infection from nasty bacterial and fungal diseases, so maintaining natural acidic PH is important. If we raise the pH of the skin we lose this protective effect allowing our skin to dry out and crack thus allowing our unsavoury “germ” friends a way past our first line of defence.

Numerous medical conditions exist which break down our skin, and chronic skin problems are common ailments many of us suffer. Interestingly, the most common substance we put on our skin is not doing us any favours. Good old fashion soap, what we have used to clean ourselves historically, is actually quite alkaline and changes the pH of the skin, lowering the protective value it has, and making it more vulnerable to infections. Many soap substitutes now exist to alleviate this problem so we can still shower and be clean but without disrupting our protective outer layer.

Sounds simple right? But as we are all aware there are many different skin types out there and a quick look in the soap substitute area will show us that many d ifferent treatments and ranges are available for the various problems. How do we choose the one that suits our skin type? Will this make my oily skin worse? Am I at risk of aggravating the problem or do I have a bigger problem that needs medical attention?
